Overview

Enel Group’s strategy of transformation into a Data Driven Company is based on the awareness that the lives of people, citizens, customers, are now "always connected". Today customers are online 24 hours a day, generating and exchanging content (and therefore data) continuously via the internet. The impact of hyperconnectivity is also strong in Enel. In fact, in 24 hours, our assets, our customers and our people talk to us through countless data, which we are learning to absorb and utilize. Enel has one of the largest international networks of clients, partners and suppliers, generating a vast amount of data that ranges from energy consumption to daily mobility activities. As a result of its different business lines, Enel has access to extensive sets of data which have grown rapidly over the last several years and will continue to grow at a tremendous rate for the future.

Given the vast amount of internal data as well as the availability of external data, Enel is seeking new and innovative ways to monetize this data by creating new business, products, and solutions that can create new revenue streams.

This Challenge provides contribution to the following SDGs:

Description

BACKGROUND

Thanks to its commitment to digitalization and expansion, Enel has one of the largest international networks of clients, partners and suppliers, generating a vast amount of data that ranges from energy consumption to daily mobility activities. As a result of its different business lines, Enel has access to extensive sets of data which have continued to grow over the last several years. Enel’s business encompasses:

  • 32 countries
  • 2.2 million kilometers of networks
  • 87 gigawatts installed capacity
  • 49 gigawatts Renewable Energy Solutions (RES) capacity
  • 70 million customers
  • >20.000 suppliers

 

The creation of value from data can be done through two different paths: monetization and valorization, and it is important to distinguish between the two (as follows a few examples).

MONETIZATION: Enhancement of existing offering, direct sale or creation of new products, focused on revenue growth and with three subsets:

1. External monetization: Raw data sales, insights, targeted data product or data driven services

  • Quandl: Build on corporate jets routes to provide insights on potential M&A activities.
  • Optum: Drugs usage and effectiveness taken from claims and sold to drugs makers.
  • The Climate Corporation: Granular weather data & advanced modelling used to develop an agri-insurance business.

2. Ecosystem orchestrator: Ownership & operation of the data platform that manages ecosystem data assets

MyJohnDeere: Integrated farming platform to help agricultural producers consolidate and manage equipment information, production data and farm operations, aiming at reducing downtime, optimizing fleet management, increasing crops yields.

3. Internal exploitation: Data leveraged to improve & upgrade existing offerings (NOTE: This subset is out of scope for the current Challenge)

Starbucks: Offering personalization & products suggestion based on consumption habits

VALORIZATION: Optimization of internal processes and operations, focused on better decision making and cost reduction (NOTE: Valorization is out of scope for the current Challenge)

Enel: Data for vegetation management activities

The focus of this Challenge is data monetization for new business using the methods of External monetization or Ecosystem orchestratorData valorization and Internal exploitation of data are outside the scope of the current Challenge and solutions addressing these topics will not be awarded.

The Enel Group has an extensive amount of data coming from the different activities and business units. The data has been clustered as:

  • SEECA (Social, economic and environmental context analysis).

THE CHALLENGE

Enel is looking for new ways of leveraging their internal data and external data to create new business, products or solutions that can create new revenue streams. The focus is to use Enel data but also to consider other sectors, industries or open data that could be interesting to be combined with Enel’s data.

With all of the datasets and information available, Enel considers possible questions that can be answered to include:

  • Can our weather data be used to develop specific services to the agriculture industry? And adding Copernicus land data?
  • Can our customer data be combined with insurance data to develop a new product?
  • Can our electric mobility data be used to solve any new trend within the cities?
  • Can our buildings and industrial site data be interesting to partner with Construction/Real Estate companies and develop a new business?

 

This is by no means a complete list of questions and it is left to the Solver to determine and present with supporting information ideas for new and innovative ways to leverage the vast amount of data at Enel’s disposal to create new revenue streams. Solvers should use the Business Idea Canvas, and provided in editable form as the attachment Business Idea Canvas.pptx, to summarize the key elements of their submission. Full submissions to this Challenge must expand on each of the tiles of the canvas to provide a detailed, comprehensive description of the proposed solution.

 

SOLUTION REQUIREMENTS

Proposed solutions should address the following Solution Requirements:

  1. Provide a new and innovative way for Enel to leverage internal and external data to increase revenue.
  2. Must utilize one or more of the internal datasets listed in Data Description.docx. Use of external datasets is optional.
  3. The innovative solution should:
    1. Be DESIRABLE, attractive to customers
    2. Be VIABLE, revenue potential
    3. Be FEASIBLE, technical, operational and legal/regulatory
    4. Demonstrate STRATEGIC FIT, synergies and competitive advantages (the solution has a significant competitive advantage in its market and fully exploits the synergies between Enel’s data and other industries/sectors data)
    5. Demonstrate an added value
    6. Achieve higher values/impacts or grant additional features/insights when combined with Enel solutions (see https://www.enel.com/company/services-and-products)
  4.  Solutions should support Enel’s commitment on SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

 

PROJECT DELIVERABLES

The submitted proposal must include the following:

  1. Detailed description of a solution that can meet the above Solution Requirements including:
    1. Completed Business Idea Canvas based on the attached file Business Idea Canvas.pptx summarizing the proposed solution.
    2. A comprehensive description expanding on each of the tiles of the canvas with detailed information.
  2. Rationale for the proposed solution and how it meets the Solution Requirements of the Challenge.
  3. Discussion of any limitations and/or barriers for the proposed solution.
  4. Detailed description of the data used for the solution including internal Enel datasets and any external datasets utilized. Proposed use of external datasets should include details on obtaining and accessing the data.

 

The proposal should not include any personal identifying information (name, username, company, address, phone, email, personal website, resume, etc.) or any information the Solvers may consider as their Intellectual Property they do not want to share.

Challenge rules

All proposers are invited to read carefully the challenge and the Regulation of this challenge, attached below in the Attachments section, before submitting a solution.

By submitting a solution they automatically accept the attached Regulations other than the Terms of Use of this platform.

Explain your proposal clearly in English, attach documents (max 5 files, 25MB total size) if needed.

 

ELIGIBILITY

The employees of the Companies of the Enel Group who are involved in the organization and management of the Challenge and all the people admitted to the Open Innovability® Portal back office, as well as their spouses or partners and their relatives up to the fourth degree, are not eligible for participation in this Challenge.

Also, employees of the companies of the Enel Group who have worked in the technical sector of the Data Monetization field and that work, in the moment of the competition, on the Data Monetization Community activities, or their spouses, partners or any of their relatives up to the fourth grade determined according to Italian law are not eligible for the participation to this Challenge.

 

CHALLENGE, AWARD, IP RIGHTS

This is an Ideation Challenge, which has the following unique features:

  • There is a guaranteed award for at least one solution. The awards will be paid to the best submission(s) as solely determined by the Seeker. The total payout will be $20,000. In case of multiple awarded solutions [maximum six (6)], there will be at least one submission receiving an award no smaller than $5,000, while the others won’t be smaller than $2,500.
  • The Solvers are not required to transfer exclusive intellectual property rights to the Seeker. Rather, by submitting a proposal, the Solver grants to the Seeker a royalty-free, perpetual, and non-exclusive license to use any information included in this proposal, including for promotional purposes.

 

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by 11:59 PM (Central European Time) on May 17, 2021

Late submissions will not be considered.

What happens next?

After the Challenge deadline, the Seeker will complete the review process and make a decision with regards to the Winning Solution(s). All Solvers that submit a proposal will be notified on the status of their submissions. Furthermore, since this is an Ideation Challenge, Solvers will only receive a high level evaluation of each submission.

Enel will evaluate the proposal using the following criteria:

  • Overall scientific and technical feasibility of the proposed solution;
  • Economic potential of concept (e.g. Total Cost of Ownership);
  • Business potential for Enel;
  • Novelty and creativity;
  • Realism of the proposed solution;
  • Maturity level of the proposal.

 

Upon completion of the evaluation, you won’t receive a detailed feedback but the evaluation results.

In case of success, an Enel contact person will get in touch with you to discuss the next steps.

The final award for this Challenge is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the verification process, including acceptance of the Challenge-Specific Agreement (CSA) that is the regulation for this Challenge.

The verification process includes obtaining the following from the Solver: signed affidavit (based on the CSA), employer waiver (if applicable), proof of identify, and Counterparty Analysis Questionnaire.
