Description

BACKGROUND

The scope of the challenge applies to MV overhead lines. On these lines, electric dischargers are installed to protect the network from overvoltage events. In order to guarantee an optimal functionality, dischargers must be monitored to determine when they are to be changed.

Most of the time, understanding if the discharger should be replaced is not straightforward. The operator will have to perform a field inspection, and if needed proceed with the substitution operation, that requires climbing on trellises or poles.

Due to the visit on field and the consequent substitution operations, this activity requires resources to be allocated, both in time and cost, impacting moreover on SAIFI and SAIDI.

THE CHALLENGE

Solvers are asked to determine a new generation of dischargers, or a device/equipment that can be coupled to the current dischargers, that can provide a fast and efficient way to know the status of a discharger, predict its longevity, understand if it is still working and inform when a discharge has taken place.

Ideally the solution would allow remote monitoring of the network and provide historical data for its analysis and predict the need of changing the discharger according to the evolution of its status or alert when it has been used.

In general, the solution needs to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Cost effective
  • Existing elements / equipment to reduce implementation time
  • If it is an add-on, easily applicable on existing components
  • Not represent a hazard for the environment
  • Easy to read/identify the status of the discharger
  • Allow remote monitoring of the network and a central database with historical data

ESTIMATED BENEFITS

  • Reduction of OPEX
  • Reduction of SAIDI and SAIFI

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • Minimum Cost
  • Availability on the market
  • Effectiveness of solution
  • Easy to deploy / use
  • Remote control and centralized database
  • Adaptability to different field situation
  • Degree of innovation
  • Environment friendly

The proposed challenge will support Enel towards achieving its commitments with the Agenda 2030 and will contribute particularly to the following SDGs:

SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

The use of these new generation of dischargers will contribute to safer and more resilient infrastructures.

Challenge rules

The proposals shall be submitted exclusively by the employees working in the perimeter of Infrastructure and Networks of Enel Group.

Explain your proposal clearly in one of the five (5) languages of Enel Group (Italian, Spanish, English, Portuguese and Romanian), attach documents (max 5) if needed and support the idea focusing on the following key drivers:

  • Solvers must develop their proposal so that benefits and feasibility can be assessed. High level ideas will be discarded as the challenge seeks for solutions that can be implemented in the short term to obtain practical results.
  • The maximum number of members for team is 3. The submission will be done by the Team Leader and the list of team members must be identified in the submission.
  • The Evaluation Committee will decide 3 finalists for each challenge and a jury will award one (1) winner per Challenge.

Proposals will be admitted until January 31, 2019 and the evaluation will start after this date.

All proposers are invited to read carefully the challenge and the regulation of this contest before submitting a solution.

By submitting a solution, you automatically accept the Regulations other than the Terms of Usage of this platform”.

What happens next?

The I&Nnovation Challenge Evaluation Committee will evaluate your proposal and might contact you to gather additional information.

  • Your innovative proposal will be evaluated based on technical parameters, economic and business impact for I&N. The presentation of the proposal will also be evaluated.
  • At the end of the assessment, you will receive feedback.
  • In case of being selected as a Finalist, an Enel I&N contact person will get in touch with you to discuss the next steps.
