Innovability® in Tel Aviv: Enel’s new AI&Robotics Lab

On September 19, 2022, Enel inaugurated its AI&Robotics Lab in Tel Aviv, Israel. The newest lab in Enel’s global innovation network, it is specialized in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics in renewables and power grids. This is the fourth innovation initiative launched by the Enel Group in Israel and is managed by Enel Green Power and Enel Grids, the Group’s business lines dedicated to clean power generation and distribution.

As Salvatore Bernabei, CEO of Enel Green Power, explains, “Innovation is a key driver in the progress of sustainable energy.” He continues: “This is why we invest so much effort in innovative ecosystems that will contribute to solving the challenges ahead.”

This lab will collaborate with startups and entrepreneurs within its network on projects ranging from cybersecurity, fintech, predictive maintenance and automation, to green power generation and e-mobility.

Guided by the principles of innovation and sustainability, this lab will host bootcamps to offer relevant ecosystem players the opportunity to work with Enel on several challenges, including the use of drones in the utility industry, ensuring worker safety through safe driving, and digitalization and automation using AI techniques to support operational processes. This lab will also specialize in the development of autonomous and innovative solutions for the construction, maintenance and safe and efficient operation of renewable energy plants.

The unique infrastructure is located in the heart of Tel-Aviv and boasts open space offices with sleek, modern meeting rooms. Furthermore, its laboratory area is equipped with prototyping tools such as 3D printers, a workbench for small robots and drones. These cutting-edge technologies allow innovators to integrate robotics, AI-powered machines, predictive maintenance software and advanced sensing capabilities to develop solutions that can revolutionize the energy sector and daily life.

Ernesto Ciorra, Chief Innovability® Officer, reveals that the use of drones, robots and Artificial Intelligence will “change the way we all produce and enjoy goods and services, work and live.” He continues that, for the Enel Group, these tools are “an enormous opportunity to prevent our colleagues and suppliers from doing dangerous work” and will “enable us to increasingly improve the performance of our power generation plants and grids, producing more energy at a lower price so that our customers pay less for it!”
